Liposuction recovery
In our offices, we perform Tumescent Liposuction under local anesthesia. The recovery is immediate. In other words, after the procedure, you get up, we dress you up with your garment, and you walk to the relaxation room. After 6-10 hours, you will begin to have some discomfort in the treated areas, which usually resolves with two plain 325mg acetaminophen oral tablets periodically.
To put it in perspective, if you undergo liposuction and liposculpture of the abdomen and love handles, on the following day you will feel mild discomfort in the abdomen as if you had done one-hundred sit-ups. You will be able to move around, to get out, to drive, and perform such routine activities. The downtime is minimal. For instance, if your work is clerical or office work, you could go back to work on the next day. However, this will all depend on the size of the treated areas, and individual responses.
In the past, or even currently in some practices, Liposuction was performed only in the hospital setting, under general anesthesia. That required intravenous fluids for the anesthesia, multiple drugs being injected intravenously, and consequent drugs-interaction with secondary side-effects. Patients in this situation need to be monitored in a recovery room facility for fluid management, and other parameters.
Although most cases did, and do, well under general anesthesia, these procedures do carry the possibility of minor to fatal risks which are associated to the general anesthesia, or even to the liposuction performed while the patient is asleep. However, none such risks has ever been reported in the medical literature related to liposuction under tumescent local anesthesia. None.
Liposuction performed in-hospital under general anesthesia tends to be a faster procedure because the patient is asleep. Liposuction performed under tumescent local anesthesia takes a bit longer, the patient is fully awake, conversing with the surgeon, and the patient is able to move around and assume certain positions, which is desired in order to achieve the best natural results in liposculpting.
Liposuction recovery depends on the technique employed.
